From small acorns, good deeds grow in Maidstone

Over 60 pupils from the Oaks Academy, Maidstone have been getting their hands dirty by taking part in a tree planting project held at Mangravet Recreation Ground this week.

The Mangravet tree planting was funded by the Community Grant of South Ward Councillors Brian Clark, Derek Mortimer and Paul Wilby, after securing the donation of the trees.  The planting totalled over 800 whips and included 10 established Oaks and Hornbeams (from The Kent Men of the Trees) - the large number of thicket whips being donated from OVO Energy, who spearhead the ‘I Dig Trees’ campaign.

With two classes taking part, the initiative was held to encourage the children from the nearby school to continue to look after the site and its wildlife as the new trees and thicket mature. The larger of the trees were put in place with the support of Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) Parks and Open Spaces team who helped prepare and plant the area.

Nicola Toulson, MBC Community Partnership Officer for Parks and Open Spaces, said:

‘We were really happy to help South Ward Cllrs with their tree planting project in Mangravet Recreation Ground.  The Councillors worked hard to secure donations of the trees and even harder when digging the frozen ground for them to be planted! The new trees will enhance Mangravet and hopefully give the children who got involved an invested interest in their local park.’

Nicola joined the tree planting project to compliment the new initiative that she now heads up - ‘Go Green Go Wild’ has been recently introduced by MBC to connect the local community with nature and green spaces, however big or small, and to continue to grow a nature rich borough.

Maidstone Borough Council is inviting individuals, communities, schools and businesses to come together as part of the ‘Go Green, Go Wild’ project where activities can range from nurturing a larger green space, creating ponds or planting boxes, to litter picking or creating your own bug hotel.
